Subject: Pollutants
Status: R

A section covering air pollutants is being added to the environmental
test manual. Below is my brief summary of its contents. Please keep
this in mind as you select components and materials for use in FIREFOX,
since it will be sold into the Industrial environment.

This is a new section. Defines quantitatively the customer
environments: Business, Industrial, and Severe, in terms of
metal corrosion rates in Angstroms per year,	pollution
concentrations in parts per billion, and particle
concentrations in micrograms of non-settleable solids per
cubic meter. The	product	must perform reliably through the
product's projected life (10 years	for business, 5	years for
     industrial).

All HP products must perform reliably at least in the
Business environment, and no special attention needs to be

given to existing technology, components, or systems	-
historical experience has shown HP products to perform
     reliably in this environment.

Products intended to be sold into	Industrial environments
should follow one or more of the following procedures:
subject the product to component and subassembly
tests in the recommended accelerated industrial
environment, protect susceptible metals (Ag, Cu, etc),
ensure at least 30 uinches	of gold	on all	separable
connectors, and include special isolation measures
(internal air purification, humidity control, etc).

Severe environment	products generally cannot be achieved by
material selection alone	- the environment must be reduced
to the industrial level by customer air purification
equipment, or enclosure	of the HP equipment in NEMA or
     equivalent	enclosure.
