This memo outlines the distribution and determines the build
requirements of Firefox prototype hardware.	This is	the
first attempt to	determine proto	requirements, and is meant
to be more of stimulant, than a	final determination. It is
recognized that as the project develops, requirements will
change,	and it will become more apparent how best to meet
       these needs.

Please review this proposed list	of requirements, and notify
       me:

		     Leith Johnson FSD
		     Telnet 226-3918
		     UNIX mail hpfcla!leith (preferred	method)

of any problems. I would like to have rev 1.0 of this list
complete	by mid May, so please return your inputs by May	11.

It is currently unknown how much	proto hardware	will cost.
Firefox's factory cost is at ~$3200, and FSD is	planning on
       recovering proto	run variances.

Firefox proto hardware will come	in three flavors, Lab Proto
(LP), Production Proto (PP),	and Pilot Run	(PR). Each
flavor will have	its own	set of characteristics as outlined
       below.

       1.1 LLLLaaaabbbb	PPPPrrrroooottttoooossss

These units are primarily for FSD hardware evaluation,	and
NMOS III chip	turnon. Depending on how well the chip	set
turns on, Firefox PDC and possibly	some early HP-UX
integration will be done with these units. Functional	LPs
will not	leave Fort Colllins. LPs should be available in
       the first quarter of 85.

The Firefox Group will not support LP units after PP units
are available. There is	no plan	for an LP to PP	upgrade.

       1.2 PPPPrrrroooodddduuuuccccttttiiiioooonnnn PPPPrrrroooottttoooossss

PPs will	be functional, with perhaps a few bugs that can be
worked around, or possibly result in lower performance.	PPs
will be fully capable of	executing HP-UX. These	units will
be of high enough quality for general distribution to
internal	software developers, and to a select number of HP's
important software OEM's. Production Proto hardware will be
available in the	second to third	quarter	of 85.

It is expected that PP units can be upgraded to be
functionally equivalent to released hardware.	The goal is
for this	to be accomplished by replaceing the system board
       and possibly the	memory controllers.

       1.3 PPPPiiiillllooootttt RRRRuuuunnnn

The primary purpose of	Pilot Run is	to check out	the
production process for	the new	product. The run size will
be driven more by production 'shakedown' considerations,
than by product development needs. Many of the units will be
used for	final verification of the hardware	design. A
limited	number	of units will be used for final software
integration efforts. It	is expected that more units will be
produced than there is	an immediate need for, however,	any
excess will probably be used for	development of follow on
products, or possibly be sent to additional software OEMs.
Pilot Run units will be available in the first	quarter of
       86.
