This is in response to your memo	to Peter Rosenbladt dated
2/13/86 regarding surface mount use on Spectrum products. I
am the design engineer for the Firefox memory boards, which
       are surface mount.

	 1. How many of the Firefox boards are	planned	to use
	     surface mount?

There are 2. One is a 2 MB	memory board and one is	a 8
	     MB	memory board.

	 2. How many of each type of these boards are in an
	     average Firefox?

The average Firefox will have 1.5 8 MB memory boards
and 1 2 MB	memory board.

	 3. Which CAD system was used to design the PC	board?

The PC board was designeds	on a Computer Vision system
used by FSD. This	system is supposed to be replaced
this year. The layout was	translated to an EGS200
system to aid in design rule and connect list
checking.	(the Schematic is done on EGS200.) FSD
manufacturing plans to use	a series 200 computer to
control the placement machine. They will have the
	     parts placement for both boards.

	 4. As	far as I know there are	no plans in place for
	     transfer to BCD.

We do not currently have	solid plans for	other surface mount
boards.	It is however possible that we would want to
surface mount our CPU board in some future product. This is
a 7.25 x	14 inch	board and would	be mixed technology.

The Firefox memory boards will initially	be built in Fort
Collins. The surface mount process is in place and is being
debugged. It may be helpful for	you to get in touch with
the surface mount people	in Fort	Collins. The project
manager in charge of setting up the process is Andy Vogen.

Cheetah and Indigo do not currently have	any plans to use
surface mount. I will however tell you there board sizes:

	  - Cheetah CPU	board -	15.75 x	13.75 inches

	  - Indigo memory board	- 13.75	x 9.25 inches

Let me know if you have any more	questions
