INSTALLING AND RUNNING THE MVS WORKLOAD MANAGER TUTORIAL

This tutorial introduces MVS Release 5.1 administrators to workload manage-
ment (WLM). It presents an animated introduction to workload management,
highlighting its benefits and features. It also explains important WLM terms
and concepts, and describes how a fictional company implemented WLM. Users
can also create an initial service definition of their own, and print it to a
  DOS file.

The goal of the tutorial is to prepare administrators for creating WLM
service definitions for use by their own companies.

  Hardware and Software Requirements

The tutorial requires the following hardware and software:

  REQUIRED HARDWARE

  o A 386 or 486 workstation (e.g., PS/2 Model 80)
o A Video Graphics Adapter (VGA) or equivalent and VGA monitor
  o A mouse
o A CD-ROM drive and the equipment needed to attach it to your workstation
o 5 MB free space on your hard disk (16MB for sound)

Note: When using the sound version, please consider the increased space
requirements and the possible performance effects.

  REQUIRED SOFTWARE

The tutorial runs under Microsoft Windows 3.1. You can run it directly under
Windows by booting with DOS and then starting Windows. However, if you have
OS/2 2.1 and the WIN-OS2 software installed, you can run the tutorial under
  OS/2, in a Windows session.

The tutorial was designed to run in VGA mode (640x480 16-color resolution).
It is recommended that you bring up your system in that mode for best
  results.

  Installing the Tutorial

To install this tutorial, do the following:

  1. Remove the CD-ROM from its protective case and insert it into the CD-ROM
      drive.

  2. Create a new directory on a drive that has 5 MB of free space (16MB of
free space for the sound version). Name the new directory WLMTUTR. For
example, to create WLMTUTR on drive D, enter:

          md d:\wlmtutr

  3. There are two versions of the tutorial; one contains sound, the other does not.
If you have 16MB of memory and a sound card, you may want to use the sound
      version.

For the non-sound version, copy WLM tutorial files from the CD-ROM direc-
tory WLMTUTR to your new directory.

For the sound version, copy WLM tutorial files from the CD-ROM directory
      WLMTUTRS to your new directory.

In the following example, the CD-ROM drive is drive F and the new direc-
tory is on drive D. From the DOS prompt, enter the following:

          [F:\WLMTUTR] copy *.* D:\WLMTUTR

      or for the sound version,

          [F:\WLMTUTR] copy *.* D:\WLMTUTRS

  4. Install the Autodesk Animation Player and Gold Disk Animation drivers
(included on the CD-ROM) by following these steps:

      a. Start your Windows session (if it is not already started)

      b. Open the MAIN window...

          files. For example:

              D:\WLMTUTR

          Click on the OK button.

      h. You are shown a list of two drivers in the WLMTUTR directory. Click
the OK button to select the first driver.

The driver is installed under Windows.

  5. REPEAT steps e through h above, but this time select the second driver in
      the list to install it.

  6. Close the DRIVERS and CONTROL PANEL windows.

Click OK to create the new group.

You now see a new window called "WLM Tutorial." The next step is to
          put an icon in it.

      d. Select FILE on the Program Manager's menu bar.

(If you installed the tutorial on a drive other than D: , use that drive letter instead.)

Or if you copied the sound version,

               Description WLM Tutorial
               Command Line D:\WLMTUTR\tbook.exe D:\WLMTUTR\wlmtutrs.tbk
