  PRINTING TIPS FOR SOFTCOPY INFORMATION
  ______________________________________

Do you want to print from READ/DOS or READ/2? Do you want a well-formatted
  printout?

Here are some tips to help you get better quality printing:

o Copy the text from the softcopy book, import it into a word processor,
and print it from there. See "Importing Text into a Word Processor."
o Use the PC Support/400 virtual print support. See "Using PC Support/400
      Virtual Print Support."

IMPORTING TEXT INTO A WORD PROCESSOR

You get much better print quality by printing BookManager topics from a word
processor than you do by printing directly from BookManager. Use the COPY
option under Services instead of the Print option. You can copy the softcopy
text and change it if you want (just be sure you maintain the copyright
  notices). Follow these steps:

  1. In BookManager, use the Copy option instead of the Print option. You
create a text file. If you do not specify a directory, BookManager
places the file in the working directory you started from.

  2. Using your favorite word processor, import the text file. If you have
trouble finding the text file, look in the working directory from which
      you started BookManager.

  3. Import the text file, using one of these import options:

      o ANSI text (for windows)
      o ASCII text (for DOS)

These options work best for MicroSoft WORD** for Windows, WordPerfect**,
      and MicroSoft Works** for Windows.

  4. For best results, use 8-point Courier type. For wide tables or syntax
diagrams, you may want to use 7, 6, or 5-point type.

If you use these guidelines to print the file, you get page separators and
  better quality output.

USING PC SUPPORT/400 VIRTUAL PRINT SUPPORT

You can use PC Support/400 virtual print support to improve the quality of
BookManager printing. This involves the following steps:

o Assigning a printer. See "Assigning a Printer" on page 2.
o Using a printer translation table. See "Using a Printer Translation
      Table" on page 3.

  Assigning a Printer

You can make an AS/400 printer or a PC printer your LPT1 printer. You can
specify the print width, lines per page, and other options.

To assign a printer, from the PC Support/400 main menu, use the "Use printers
on host system" option, or use the SETVPRT program. Sample softcopy entries
  are:

o Changing the lines per page from 66 to 60, to allow for page perforations
o Changing the default non-printable character from hexadecimal 40 (a
blank) to hexadecimal 4B (a period).

Here are some sample entries for when you assign a printer:

    PC printer . . . . . . . . . . . : LPT1

  Using a Printer Translation Table

Sometimes, the virtual print support cannot print the characters in tables or
syntax diagrams. If this is true, use a printer translation table to convert
characters into other characters that will print meaningful information. You
can use the one named BOOKMGR.TBL, which is supplied on the CD-ROM. It is in
the TECHTIPS directory. (It was created using the TRTABLE utility in the
  QIWSTOOL folder).

To specify or change a translation table, you must first assign a printer.
Then, from the Current Virtual Printers display, select the translation table
item at the top of the display. The entries are:

  o User-defined translation table
  o A translation table filename of: \TECHTIPS\BOOKMGR.TBL

  Here are the sample entries:

Change the Translation Table for a Virtual Printer

Select options and then press Enter to change the translation table.

    PC printer . . . . . . . . . . . . *. LPT1
                                      > 2. LPT2
                                        *. LPT3
                                        *. LPT4
                                        *. LPT5
                                        *. LPT6
                                        *. LPT7
                                        *. LPT8
                                        *. LPT9
