Redbook Abstract
Eight Steps to a Successful Messaging Migration: A Planning Guide for Migrating to Lotus Notes and Domino, SG24-5335-00
  Abstract
This redbook describes how to plan for a messaging coexistence and migration project with Lotus Notes and Domino as the target messaging environment. While the information covered in many of the chapters applies to a migration from any source messaging system, either LAN-based or host-based, to Lotus Notes and Domino, some of the chapters focus on planning topics related specifically to a migration from Lotus cc:Mail to Lotus Notes and Domino. The first chapter gives an overview of the eight steps required to complete a successful migration project and discusses aspects related to the project team, project sponsorship, and the project timeline. Subsequent chapters discuss each of the migration steps in more detail. First we present information on why and how to document the business requirements for a coexistence and migration project followed by a chapter explaining what information needs to be documented about the current Lotus cc:Mail environment. The next chapter emphasizes the importance of developing a training plan which addresses the needs of everyone in the company affected by the migration from the old to the new messaging environment. Then details are given on how to plan, design, and document the new messaging environment, in this case Lotus Notes and Domino, and how to run a pilot project to validate the new environment. The remaining chapters focus on the development of a coexistence and migration strategy including a discussion of the available coexistence and migration tools as well as on validating that strategy through a pilot project. Once the design of the new messaging environment has been finalized, the push begins to deploy the coexistence and migration strategy across the company. The final step is to close out the coexistence and migration project. This redbook makes reference to third-party products. By including them in this document, IBM/Lotus do not solely endorse these products for use in this type of environment. Other third-party products may be available that perform similar or equivalent functions. The redbook was written for customers, IBM and Lotus business partners, and the IBM and Lotus community, who need a high-level understanding of how to plan for a coexistence and migration project, in particular, a migration from Lotus cc:Mail to Lotus Notes and Domino.
