This redbook compares Lotus Domino Release 5.0 and Microsoft Exchange Server Release 5.5 from a technical perspective.
The first chapter introduces, at a summary level, the contents of this redbook. It states that while the redbook title implies a technical comparison between Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange, a more accurate description would be a comparison between Lotus Domino and the Microsoft Back Office Suite.
Chapter 2 explains the infrastructures of Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange Server. The chapter provides a high-level overview of topics such as product-specific terminology, supported platforms and protocols, replication and mail routing, as well as messaging coexistence and migration options.
Chapters 3 through 9 explore in depth the following aspects relating to both products: Security, systems management, Internet messaging, application development, enterprise integration, systems availability, and user mobility. Each chapter provides a detailed technical description. First, the chapter documents the features offered by Lotus Domino in the area of security, for example, then the same or similar features provided by Microsoft Exchange Server are discussed. Throughout each chapter, important differences between the two products are pointed out. Also, each chapter ends with a comparative summary listing the major items covered in the chapter.
The redbook was written for Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange technical specialists and system administrators, customers, business partners, and the IBM and Lotus community who need a thorough understanding of how Lotus Domino Release 5.0 and Microsoft Exchange Server Release 5.5 compare on a technical level.
