Extensible Markup Language (XML) is key Java technology. It allows data to become independent of the platform on which it resides, where Java allows application code to be platform independent. The combination of Java and XML allows the entire application to be platform independent. Many application providers are considering XML as part of their application architecture. XML is important to the AS/400 system because it allows the AS/400 system to participate in this new application architecture.
This redbook demonstrates the new capabilities in the XML-based tools, PDML and PCML, on the AS/400 system. It includes defining the value of the two XML dialects and how to use them to benefit both a legacy application and new Java-based application.
This book also describes how PDML can be used to develop graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that are described in XML and presented as Java/Swing GUIs. It also shows how the tools provided with PDML can be used to visually create a user interface, focusing on the recent enhancements made to the GUI Builder for PDML.
